During the Middle Ages, vergers were responsible for the order
and upkeep of the house of worship, including preparations for the
liturgy, the conduct of the laity, and grave-digging. They
literally cleared the way of animals and thieves (with their verge
or mace) for the procession to enter the church through town.
Today, a verger acts as a sort of master of ceremonies, pointing the
way for the service by leading and facilitating the liturgy's
movement.
